How to Prevent Chain Saw Accidents?

Most chain saw injuries occur because operators come into contact with the blade by failing to follow recommended operating procedures. The best way to prevent chain saw accidents is to follow the owner's manual carefully. Not only this, before one actually starts working with the chain saw it is important that you have just the right type of clothing, head, hearing and eye protection.

TIPS ON PERSONAL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS

SAFETY HELMET: These are extremely important as they provide protection against any falling branches or tree limbs which might prove fatal at times. There are numerous hardhats widely available in the market and you might even go in for one of those hats having built-in hearing and eye protection. What you need to remember here is that you must have these hats replaced every three to four years according to the manufacturer's advice.

HEARING PROTECTION: Chain saws are known to produce noise upto 120 to 130 decibels which can result into long term hearing loss. In addition to this, over-exposure to that level of noise can also result in operator fatigue. Thus, it is really important that you should always wear ear muffs to protect your ears from the loud noise that these chain saws create.

EYE PROTECTION: Goggles are one of the most commonly used equipments for eye protection. Another commonly used equipment is the face screen. In fact it is always advisable to use the goggles along with the face screen so that you can have maximum protection from the flying chips and splinters of wood.

CLOTHING: Clothing that is tight yet flexible is just ideal for the operators while handling chain saws. The most recommended piece of clothing for the legs, arms and hands are those made of woven nylon, Kevlar fiber or a similar sort of material. Steel toed boots are also extremely useful when it comes to protective clothing.
